Mother's Day 2014

Today was a great day!  I've got a girl with a very big heart.  Earlier this week, she asked me if I knew what special day was coming up.  I responded that yep, it was her birthday.

Nope, Mom, that's not the one.  It's on Sunday, Mother's Day!!

What 5 year old counts the days to Mother's day over their own birthday?

Last night as she was about to go to bed, "Remember what tomorrow is Mom?! I'm so excited!"

I heard her feet hit the floor this morning and come flying down to give me a big hug and a kiss and a joyful "Happy Mother's Day, I love you!"  Seriously, the best gift ever, when she totally remembers it on her own.

We planned on going to 8:30am Mass, which is always a little rush rush, since we roll out of bed around 7am.  I was heading in the shower and overheard her "Daddy, I think we should get Mommy's breakfast ready for her, because it's Mother's Day!"  What a big heart she's got!!

It was a great day filled with lots of special family moments!  I've been meaning and meaning to get over and try Hazel's Northeast.  It's owned by two fellow Alexandria Brothers.  It was fabulous, I would HIGHLY recommend it, not that it needs any recommendations, it was packed!!

There was a water fountain across the street, that Daddy took the girls to look at :)

Craigmile Crew, Party of 5 ;) Waiting for our table!

Perks of knowing the owner, he brought us Mimosas while we were waiting...if only I could have had mine :)
We had so many full out belly laughs during this meal.  Honest to goodness, they crack us up!! It was such a great time!!

We came home and Daddy insisted to run a quick errand...

to pick out flowers for Mommy :)

We had a successful nap time, even Mommy!  The rain held off--Yay!! and we walked to Caribou for our BOGO with a stop at the park!

I love the series of these pictures

Mastering the web!

We came home to have Sally practice some more on the little bike without training wheels.  She is doing excellent and Daddy is being very patient!  She's getting the hang of it and getting pretty far on her own.  Practice Practice Practice !

Daddy grilled us some brats, we went outside for some more biking.  Libby was working on her scooter skills.  Daddy did clean up and showers and some quick bed time stories, and now they are sleeping soundly.

I know many people overuse the word blessed, but I truly do feel so very blessed to be the Mom of these two beautiful girls {and Squirt!}.  They make my heart smile each and every day and I thank the Lord for trusting me with them!!

Happy Mother's Day to my Mom, the one who taught me to be a mom and helped shaped me to be who I am today.  Love you Mom!

And Happy Mother's Day to all of the other Mama's out there, especially the ones who so desperately would like to be one!! xxo

Sally's 5!!!

My Dear Sweet Sally Ann!  My heart has been exploding with love for you these past few weeks.  I don't know if it's because you're giving me a glimpse in to a more mature five year old or the weepiness of your mama, knowing you'll soon be entering Kindergarten.

You show your emotions something quite fierce.  When you're happy everyone around you knows it.  When you are frustrated you certainly let your mama know it :)

You have the kindest most empathetic heart of any five year old I know!  You know you are meant to make people's days a little brighter and you take that job so seriously.  You don't care if it's the baby inside Mommy's belly or the policeman parked aside us waiting for the light to turn green {true story!}. You will smile, wave and say hello to anyone and everyone.  I hope you don't every lose that twinkle of love in your eye!

Your sister so adores you and everything you do.  For the most part you are an excellent big sister to her.  It's a tough job and you have taught her many things.  I love to stand within ear shot of the two of you playing, to hear your little conversations.  I can only imagine that bond to grow stronger as you start to share a room and you head off to Kindergarten.

You already have a big place in your heart for baby.  I can't count how many kisses you give my belly, daily.  You remember the baby in your prayers and whenever you're counting how many people will be in one place.

You and your Daddy, you're one in the same.  You certainly know how to push each others buttons and the next minute make the other laugh until they cry.  He loves his special one on one time that he gets with you every once in a while during quiet time.  He loves you a crazy amount!

Your Dad and I are so very proud of who you are becoming. You are one of a kind Sally Ann.  We're so blessed to call you ours.  Happy 5th Birthday Sweet Girl.  Thank you for being you, I love you!

Sally's 5th year:

Yesterday in Sally's interview, I realized I forgot to ask her what she wanted to be when she grew up.  She has recently said that she wants to be a Sheriff.  Reid asked her if she knew what a Sheriff did and she responded, "Yep, they keep everyone safe!"

Yesterday we were at a rather long red light and we pulled up next to a cop.  The girls waved, like they always do and the cop rolled his window down.  My heart skipped a beat.  {Crap, am I in trouble? Are the girls not buckled correctly??} I rolled my window down.

Hello there, good morning! Said the Officer.

The girls wanted to say Hi and give a thumbs up.

Officer: Enjoy the day, Girls.  Drive safely!

Girls: Thank you for doing what you do!

Just another moment to be remembered :) As the light turned green I explained to Sally that, that was a Sheriff.  Is that what you want to be when you grow up, Sally?

Yes, Mom, but I want to ride a horse, not drive a car. {There's a new show on Disney Junior called Sheriff Callie's Wild West...}

Sentimentalby Annie Flavin

“You’re so sentimental now.”

I respond defensively at first.
But then,
I think,
how would I otherwise
make it through?

I pour myself
a glass at 5pm,
or meet friends at a park,
to laugh off the day.

But then,
when it’s the middle of the night
and the bottle’s empty
and the friends are asleep,
but my baby is awake,
what then?

When I’m so tired
that anger is the first emotion
I feel
when the few minutes of sleep
I’ve gotten
are interrupted,
I stop myself.

I’ve dreamed of you.
I’ve wanted you.
You are everything to me.

If I don’t take a moment,
to watch them while they sleep on me,
how can I deal with them
while they’re awake?

If I don’t take a moment
to notice and remark
on their tiny hands and pudgy feet,
how can I stand
the trail of disaster
they leave in their wake?

Is a toddler whiney?
Is a teenager moody?
A mother is sentimental.

I’ve seen the mother
of older kids
glancing at me in the grocery store
as I corral my children.
She looks
wistfully
at the chaos
and says,
“Enjoy it. It goes by so quickly.”

She’s a sap, too,
like all of the mothers before her.

Just like me. Just like you.
Just like all of us
when we remember
our baby asleep
on our chest.

In the Closet
by Annie FlavinI sit down to take a bite –
the first bite,
the last bite;
they want it all,
except if it’s on their own plate.

I would give them
any organ in my body,
any breath they needed,
my life.

Yet I hide
in the kitchen,
in the pantry,
over the sink,
and eat my food –
shovel my food –
into my mouth
before they can ask for it.

“Mama?”
“Yes, honey?”
“Why does your mouth smell like chocolate’s in there?”

“There, there, sweetheart.

Go to sleep.”

Snapshots
by Annie FlavinI take a picture of her
in my mind.
I record her words
in my heart.
If I can, I snap a picture.
If I can, I write it down.

I do this for the day
she yells at me,
or mumbles under her breath
if she’s learned anything at all,
“I hate you”
or “You don’t understand me”
or “It’s not fair”
in ten years.

Please,
let it be ten years
before that is here.

It will still feel like it is tomorrow.

I do this for tomorrow
when she melts down into a puddle of a child
before nap time.

I do this for myself so that
I can calmly scoop her up
and into my arms
because
I remember her.

She,
in her pink tutu and ruby red slippers,
frolics down the street
brushing the blond wisps of hair
out of her blue moon eyes.

“Mama, I love you like a rainbow loves.
Big and colorful, and so big.”

Hop, skip, twirl.
Light, free, joy.

The sun shines brightly
on what’s left of her blond pig tails.

I use these snapshots to pad my heart.

For all of the tomorrows to come.

Sally's 5 year old Interview

It's the eve of Sally's 5th Birthday!  Here is her 5 year old interview.  Enjoy!

If you like to look back, like I do, here is her:

Three Year Old Interview

and her:

Four Year Old Interview

I see a lot of similarities and a lot of maturing.  Crazy how it just happens right in front of us.  You just don't notice the big differences until you look back. Love my little-big-girl to pieces!

Stay tuned for her fifth year slideshow tomorrow!

Libby's Second Year Photo Book

Before it's actually Sally's 5th Birthday, I wanted to make sure to share Libby's second year photo book that I finally got myself to finish...only 6 months late.

At least I'm giving myself until after Kindergarten starts, to finish Sally's last book.  I want to be sure to have a picture of her first day in it.

Here is little Miss Libby's 2nd year.  "I just love you," is one of our favorite Libby lines!

Sun Shiny Day

The Sun came out even more!

This weekend we got the lawn furniture out.  Can I just say how awesome "nap time" was today? :)  The Sun was shining the girls were napping and mommy was thawing her winter bones :)

Our weekend was great!  Daddy had Friday off, so it was technically a 3-day weekend.  Saturday morning he took the girls to get donuts, we went bowling and walked to the park all before lunch.

Mornings are my favorite
She adores him as much he adores her

I love her little look of approval

Proud solo bowler
Sunday morning, Sally had her last Sunday school, we did some biking, lounging, yard work, organizing and grilling.

A favorite moment from the weekend.

All of us had after nap snacks together and just talked for a little bit
I don't know what it was, but for some reason I wanted to remember Libby's little bouncy run down the sidewalk.  A moment I want to remember.

We watched the Kentucky Derby.  We each picked a different horse to win.  Reid said the person who chose the highest standing horse would get to pick the dessert for the next night.  Sally picked horse 5 {"because I'm going to be 5"}.  Horse 5, California Chrome, won.  Little Miss winner chose DQ :)

a perfect end to a splendid weekend!

**Oh, and little Squirt was a bit like popcorn this weekend.  Love this pregnancy stage!

Happy Teacher Appreciate Week to all of my fellow teachers!!

TGIF

The SUN is out!!!

Happy Belated May Day!  The Selby Family do a great job of keeping the May Day Basket tradition alive.  Thank you for the surprise at our door yesterday!

We scored an awesome unlimited summer bowling pass that's good May-October.  We had our first afternoon there yesterday!  It will help fill the void of rainy days and something fun and different to do.

Reminds me of when I was school age.  My neighborhood friends and I would bike up to our local bowling alley and bowl a game each day of the summer and then get a 50 cent ice cream cone!

Keeping the traditions alive!

Sally graduated to a solo bowler!

Libby was not too happy that Mommy still had to help her.  "But I AM 4, I can do it!!!" I feel your pain second born ;)

I couldn't get over how "cute" size 6 bowling shoes were :)

Sally had Kindergarten Roundup this morning.  It happened to fall on a day that Libby also has school, so Daddy took the day off and took L to school while I went with Sally.

It was lots of fun, crazy that this time has already arrived!

Perks of knowing one of the teachers, you get your own personal text with pictures :)  She said Sally looked up just as she snapped it.

During separation time Libby told her teachers "I love my Daddy, Daddy didn't have to go to work today. He got to bring me to school."

Mommy's just chopped liver, she's always around ;)

Happy Friday, Happy Weekend, Happy Everything!
